• Many ‘influencers’, especially commercial businesses, their advertising departments and supporters have no connection with nature.

• Nature is considered to be ‘A constraint on development’ (by the influencers)

• The influencers are much happier with the term ‘Ecosystem Services’, which sees nature only for its financial value metric.

• Rather than corrupting thinking with the word ‘Value’ we can use the term ‘Quality’. There are many qualities in life which are intrinsically important to many of us: truth, health, love, 'a sense of purpose'. You would not need to place a purely economic ‘value’ on them.

• Many people have an emotional, even spiritual connection with nature  #Biophilia 

• Over 70 years after the ‘Nature Conservancy’ was established in Britain, there has been a continuing depletion of nature. Few of us have seen eggs in a bird nest. We cannot identify tree species, plants or wild creatures. This was common knowledge two generations ago when 'nature study' was taught at school.

• Many of us today cannot differentiate between semi-natural areas and species-poor commercial land.

• Commercial businesses continue to exploit and destroy the natural environment #Ecocide - yet many people don’t even see it happening!

Solution

• Find your local wildlife sites (there is a Maps Of Sites link on this page to help with this).

• See and experience nature, even in urban and suburban area. Across Brighton and Hove ‘nature’ includes the geological and geomorphological world which underlies the soil, roads and buildings above it.

• Learn how nature changes over the seasons in your local wildlife sites.

• Speak with other people about the sites you know.

• Add your knowledge and sightings to national wildlife recording systems. It’s now very easy online.

• Help to protect and enhance the natural qualities in your area.
